more cockatoos on the deck!

Grand Pacific Hotel Lorne

I stayed near this grand old icon of Lorne.

near a pier for an early morning jog...

and lots of sand, sea and sky.

and birds! I told you yesterday about the birds....

well, on day 2 this little guy turned up.

bare-eyed cockatoo

he looked like he'd had a fight with a watermelon..... or chainsaw!

he was so ugly......but cute-ugly.

he called to his girlfriend, and....to be 'politically correct'.....

she was his 'visual equal' !

these two weren't as bossy as the other cockatoos,

and they always showed up together, inseperable,

like a funny, doddery pair of grandparents.

and just like a couple of oldies, they'd leave the party early

and fly off to their perch in a nearby pine tree.

ain't love grand!

cockatoos on the deck!

a beach along the Great Ocean Road, Victoria

Spent a couple of days in Lorne, waking up to this.

actually, this was down the road and around a few bends....

...it was more like this.....

view from front deck

and this.....

view from side deck

except in reality it was sunrise, many hours earlier.

each morning my dawn wake-up came at 6.15 am

with the raucous babble-and-cackle of a tribe of kookaburras,

creating their ear-splitting din,

followed by the screeching cacophany of the Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos.

......so much for the peace and quiet of the Australian bush!

we were adopted (stalked) by a very possessive family of birds

....every time we stepped outside to enjoy the view.....

they would swoop in, eager for a snack!

........on the last night I counted 13.....sitting perched....

...watchful....surrounding us,

.....niggling amongst themselves as to which ones would fly in

and take prime position on our table.

they were cheeky enough to assume they could help themselves

to the food on our plates!

and by the time we left,  they were taking food from my hand.

when we retreated inside with our plates,

they'd hover outside, often tapping their beaks on the glass....

lined up, impatient and hopeful,

like kids at the tuck-shop!

cockatoos on the deck

they are so personable....with such wacky little characters...

.....and they are so tame.

though I'm not sure who was taming who, and whether it was me or them

who had the upperhand!

                         .....more tomorrow!

The Weekly Review....and I'm in it!

I'm in print!

there is a wonderful article on my artwork in this week's 'The Weekly Review'.

.....titled 'Sands of Time...... issue February 8-14, 2012....

with such a stunning cover photo, I had a copy of the magazine in my hands

for a full 3 hours before I realized that my name was on the cover!

cover photo of Brett Kirk by John Donegan/1826 Media

......that photo is mesmerizing!

I hope to post the article as soon as I find out the ethics of putting a copy

on my blog.

but you can see an abbreviated 'online version'  by clicking here,

but the real thing is so much prettier with five paintings featured    :)

 so stay tuned !
