learning skills for life

Inspired by the myriad of water activities I enjoyed as a child,

and growing up with yachts, dinghies, boards and the beach...

...always the beach....this painting just had to have

some 'little tackers' in life jackets.

I've been tweaking and fiddling with the face of this little fellow

right up until the last minute....but now he must be varnished

because he's off to the Camberwell Art Show.

His mate too, has been through a few incarnations....

...and because I've been working flat out to finish work for this show

I just had to get some exercise and  clear my head for a bit....

so what better place late this afternoon than Parkdale beach.....

the sun was beckoning... the paint needed to dry..... and I needed

to step away from the canvases or I'd wreck them!

and of course  I have to get my fix of salt-air at least once a week!

I love the unfinished, 'barely there' look to this little fellow.

sometimes my paintings surprize me....he just appeared.....

....with the minimum of brush strokes.

I didn't want to overwork or over-detail him.

I liked his expression....it's extremely difficult for me to know

when to stop, when to stop fiddling!

this is how he ended up.....

I think I did well to leave him as he is.... what do you think?


 and as I headed on to the verandah of my studio to varnish,

I was surprised to see these 'contrails'  streaking across the blue.

we are enjoying the most exquisite calm, still , clear winter days,

and the airwaves of Melbourne were discussing these....

....the conspiracy-theorists  agog with the thought

that the government was messing with the environment again!
                          

Contrails ...(short for "condensation trails") or vapor trails are long thin artificial (man-made) clouds that sometimes form behind aircraft. Their formation is most often triggered by the water vapor in the exhaust of aircraft engines...from Wikipedia

....heart-stoppingly beautiful blue skies.....how lucky are we!

....winter has arrived....

Winter has officially started and the real-time weather

has now definitely fallen in step with the season.

So even though I've had my 'medicinal' sniff of salt water

and seaweed scents....

I've been finding it difficult to maintain the momentum for painting

bare chests and zinced noses. It's just tooo cold. And wet. And grey.

... so amidst all the half-finished 'summer' paintings.....

my mind is wandering..... and guess what.....a little distraction....

a little hint of what's on my easel right now.

'Team Red' and 'The Dream Team'

after the rain......

Today marks the first day of winter, and it arrived

last night with a massive deluge of rain....even smashing records

for 'most rain in one day'

my studio sprang a leak but luckily none of my canvases were affected.

I'm hoping it won't happen again....I just think the storm water drains

were overloaded and water couldn't escape down into the system.

....all that rain led to these little beauties..... toxic....poisonous.....but they

 remind me of my childhood.....the fairies always sat on

or lived under spotted-toadstools in my Fairy-Tale books!

I didn't think they really existed...but these are near my studio..... it's funny

what memories and images stay with you....

and for no other reason except that red seems to be the colour for today.....

two paintings from a year or so ago....and right where I'm standing

is now a trifle soggy....        :(
