I love watching kids, I love being with kids.
I love their energy, their optimism.
I love the awkward years, the gangly years.....the years between four and twelve.....when they outgrow everything.....even it seems their own bodies.
when they're all elbows and knees.....and clutsy!
I love clutsy, clumsy kids!
and those kids that are so full on into everything, they can't wait for their brains to catch up with their bodies.
and those kids that just go about their business, lost in their own thoughts, planning, fiddling, creating, messing.

And the words are from three plus years ago.
I still feel the same....
some things never change!

I'm busy finishing paintings for an exhibition
at Manyung Gallery in Sorrento....
it's called 'School Holidays at Sorrento',
and opens Saturday 20 September, 2014,
and runs thru to 05 October.

this painting is one that epitomises school holidays ....
baggy boardies, blue skies, and bags of stuff!
'keep'em busy and keep'em tired' was my motto....
then bath, a hearty dinner and early to bed...and repeat!
it all worked fine until the cousins arrived,
or that special show on tv, or that treat to the movies!
but that's what holidays are for...doing it all and doing not much!

...'Children of Summer...no 2
Six down and more to do.They may be small but I can still make a mess!
It's Anzac Day and I've been busy varnishing for some upcoming Art Shows.
My fingers are covered in fine varnish and look like a shedding snake....peeling
it off is like peeling off my fingerprints!
I'm thinking gloves would be a good option!

This painting is one of two that were inspired by this old photo....
I wrote about it back in December here...
Not called 'wellies' in our house....we had 'Gumboots'....lots of them....
all lined up at the door .....poked inside each other so the spiders
couldn't get in!
and there always seemed to be 3 pairs too many!

and someone who's 'off with the fairies.'
and they are getting a tad grumpy because they don't want to leave.
nor do they don't want to stand still for a photo!
every family has photos like this!

I've come back to the studio and there's a jack-hammer, and two bull-dozers
and a tip-truck smashing and battering away next door.
so much for a peaceful morning!
these three nippers have their sights set on what they need to do.
and as for me....I think I may need to step up to the easel, turn up the radio,
load up some paint, and get cracking! and ignore the din!

This seems an appropriate painting to herald a crisp, shiny New Year.
leaping forward.....flying off with abandonment and joy.
a painting also headed for my Exhibition..... just needs varnishing!

this painting titled itself....it was only after I'd made the decision that I realized
how attached my own kids are to the Maurice Sendak book.
it's stored in the roof-space ....too 'special' to give away....
and they're also huge fans of the movie, with its amazing production values
and stunning imagery....filmed in Flinders and other stunning locations
around Victoria.
So a little reminder of the original.... who would guess it's over 50 years old!

in Queensland I visited the Tannum Sands Surf Lifesaving Club.

| what amazed me was the huge tankers, headed for Gladstone, dotting the horizon |

but these little nippers are not Tannum kids...
they're just out of my imagination and they're on their way to Sorrento and
the Manyung Exhibition mid-January.
