Canterbury Art Exhibition 2012 ...part 2

actual sky colour....I know ......I didn't believe it myself !
but undoctored photo straight from my trusty pentax!

As I've mentioned before, I have a real predilection for artwork that is all

about the 'mark-making'....the quality of the brushwork or line work.

...its the inherent energy, the loose gestural quality, the scratchiness,

 the 'character' of the mark.....

yes, it's the personality of the actual marks on the canvas that appeals to me.

this is a perfect way to start your day......
with a painting by Mitch Vane

that's why when I saw  this stunning tiny canvas by Melbourne illustrator

Mitch Vane at the Canterbury Art Exhibition

it had to come home with me!

I love the sketchiness, the simplicity, the humour of her drawings,

and the quirkiness behind her ideas.

and it cheers me up!

for a bigger dose of Mitch Vane's humour and her delightful paintings

and illustrations , visit her web page  right here.

and whilst you browse, I'm off and back to my brushes!

Camberwell Rotary Art Show 2012

Would you like to hear my news? I knew you would!

Well here goes....I was very excited to be asked to be a 'Feature Artist'
at the Camberwell Rotary Art Show.

'The Camberwell', as it's known thru'out Australia,
is a very prestigious, long-running (currently in its 46th year)
art exhibition with over $55,000 in prizes and awards.

I spoke about this Show last year....it's a favourite of mine......but much more so  now!

this show receives literally thousands of entries
from all over Australia, and just to succeed
in being 'hung' is a terrific honour... but to 'feature' !!!  :)

but that's not all!

not only was I asked to be a  'Feature Artist' ....
with all my work at the very front,
prime position as you enter, and all hung together
with my bio and press info for everyone to see,
but it gets better!

.....I won an Award!

.....Highly Commended .....for this painting.

I had no idea!
I went along to see the Exhibition yesterday afternoon and was very happily surprized!

and notice the red spot too!

you can see all the work selected to be hung this year if you click here .

oh my-oh-my!

I'll post you some better images tomorrow! Off to pop some champagne!

Camberwell Rotary Art Show

Artwork by William Linford

Later today I'm heading off here.

I have work exhibited in the Camberwell Rotary Art Show.

this show has been running for 45 years, and is one of Australia's largest and best known indoor Art Competitions and Art Exhibitions, with work from established and emerging artists, and $55,000 of prizes.

the Show was always restricted to "traditional, representational art", and the prizes were/ are always awarded in this area (not my "contemporary art" offerings...)

however I've always had good  results at this show.... twice I've ended up on the stage ( read "in the spotlight, above the masses, with the show-ponies.... yay! go me! ) because , I guess, my artwork has a different look and appeals to a different market segment... a more 'contemporary' market.

but this year the poster is far edgier, more contemporary than its  ever been.... way more 'in your face'.... literally! ....and I suspect there are changes afoot!

I'll just have to go and see!

maybe I'll see you there!

Small but Beautiful

The Canterbury Art Show is over for another year and exhibited some fabulous contemporary Australian paintings....so many of which I wanted to add to my collection....

but I couldn't resist these two tiny works by Sheryl Lewis.
she is an artist whose work I've admired for so many years.
and now I own two!

I love the looseness, the barely 'there-ness', the scratchiness, almost scribbled look of these two tiny 10x10cm paintings.

in the past I've tried to put this nonchalence, this relaxed but energetic , calligraphic linework into my own paintings, but I always get bogged down by the detail and my desire for more 'completion.'

I struggle to get this 'casualness'.... this rawness....in fact I can say that I 'just...can't...do...it!'

it looks easy but for me it's not!

and Sheryl makes this look so effortless.

just love them!
