I'm busy finishing paintings for  an exhibition
at Manyung Gallery  in Sorrento....
it's called 'School Holidays at Sorrento',
and opens Saturday 20 September, 2014,
and runs thru to 05 October.

this painting is one that epitomises school holidays ....
baggy boardies, blue skies, and bags of stuff!
'keep'em busy and keep'em tired' was my motto....
then bath, a hearty dinner and early to bed...and repeat!
it all worked fine until the cousins arrived,
or that special show on tv, or that treat to the movies!
but that's what holidays are for...doing it all and doing not much!

.... if you're down on the Peninsula over the holidays, (lucky you!) pop in to Manyung ....
a good excuse to escape the kids and take a breather!

.... a forecasting stone.....

postcard from Scotland

This postcard arrived from Scotland today...

I needed one of these stones  yesterday when more wild weather

and flash flooding turned my local main street into a river!

rain, (lots) and hail as big as ice -cubes....

the trams ploughed ( sloshed?) their way through the torrent.

luckily no real damage at home here....just shredded plants and soggy everything.

I hope my studio hasn't sprung a leak!   :(                     Jo

'This is the Life'

'This is the Life'...family, holidays, sunshine, time that stretches....

that was a 'dad-ism' I heard frequently growing up.

...yep, his optimism  was a bit like the character in the movie 'The Castle!'

That phrase still gives me the 'warm and fuzzies' ...

it's a feeling that is embedded in this painting...

it went thru a few permutations.....it was a request from Manyung Gallery

for a painting with '3 boys and a girl' for one of their clients.

a beginning....06 may

a little colour....19 May

24 May....the dress has gone.....

...30 Aug...and I'm not too keen on this little fellow's head.... but how to fix it?

...so the blue hat is off and he gets a makeover....  05 September...

...the bathers win again....

work in progress

an update on the little girl in the dress....
I showed the beginnings of this painting
way back on 11th June....it was
a request for a gallery client....
they want three boys and a girl...
I didn't think the dress looked right...
so she's now in bathers...
...or togs.... cozzie....swimsuit....
depending on what part
of Australia you are in !

work in progress......

there's still a bit of tweaking to do, then varnishing and finishing....then she'll be off to the Gallery for display to their client.

.....I hope her new family approves of her change of attire!

...I found this picture in the local paper a long time ago....
it's so difficult to get photos of children these days
with all the privacy laws.....
and I really loved the boy with the icecream,
the variety of hats  and the excited stoop of the little girl.

But when I painted the little girl
                                                                       stooping she looked decidedly odd....
what works in a photo often looks
                                                                              hideous in a painting!!

...tomorrow I'll show you how these little people grew and developed.
