U-Boats and Beaches

Sorrento, Victoria
late Spring 2010

Some months back I took a day-trip to Sorrento, a favourite haunt just one hours drive from home. the day was remarkable for two things.

Remarkable Fact no 1 ....

I saw a submarine in the bay. excitedly I pointed this out to some elderly ( or middle-aged, or mature, or fully-grown, or ripened...whatever you fancy is politically correct) tourists happily snapping photos of the pier, the sand, the trees, everything but this torpedo shape slicing quietly through the water.

'jah, ooh-boat, oooh-boat' he said in his heavy russian/germanic accent, looking at me , puzzled.

obviously submarines in his part of the world are an everyday occurrence.........first time I've ever seen one in Port Phillip!

Remarkable Fact no 2....

photographed with friends, same day,  at the beach, this shot has become the catalyst for a whole new series of paintings ....my 'Small Works' ....which I hope to spotlight on ths blog.

it was such a perfect day....
she just didn't want to go home.....

favourite meal:  risotto con piselli (risotto with peas) in Padova with             the relatives....all of us at home, around the table....grazie Paola
favourite drink:  blood oranges, freshly squeezed
favourite sound:  the buzz of the vespas in Florence
favourite scent: the smell of saltwater on the oysters in Marseille
favourite song:  whatever it was he sung....the man that sang as he walked, on his way to work, through the narrow streets, singing just for himself, at 6am, his voice resonating off the stone walls and cobblestones, in Amalfi
favourite purchase:  my hand-painted plates from Positano
favourite view:  way, way, way too many to mention.....

so this one is for the memories...

'Market Day Delivery' was inspired by stories told to me by my lovely mother-in-law.

on market days, she said, people in her village in Italy would lower a basket from their window to the street below, with their order and money for their fruit and veg.
the farmer/ travelling merchant would load the basket with the pomodoro, olive oil, radicchio,
whatever was ordered, and then go on their way.

I hanker for the 'good-old-days'  when life was simple and you could sleep with your door open,
and leave money on the step under the milk bottles.
I know....I know.... no washing machines, no phones, no dishwashers, no internet.

but I still hanker.
I even hanker for the loss of the word 'hanker'.

do you hanker?

b is for.......

Today was beautiful.

a capital 'B' beautiful.

just blue skies that stretched from your place to mine.
no sparrows on the deck today,
just blackbirds, bees, and of course, the 'B'.
and lots of butterflies.... white ones, black ones and brown.
I tried to photograph them but they escaped me....
I wouldn't want to hang around waiting for a camera to focus either if I had wings and had only a few days to live.

Did I mention the sunshine!

Just the Beginning

What was that?
Is it really happening?
Is she really going to do it?

Yes...she's starting....she's at the computer.
It'll be ok.
It's on....I knew she do it!

Welcome to my Blog!

And thanks B for the vote of confidence!
